Description
The Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea has funded the climate change mitigation and adaptation project under the Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Italy, Austria, Luxemburg, Spain and the Smaller Island States of the Pacific Islands.
The project provides for the creation of durable, zero-GHG-emission energy and water services for 18 small communities located in three provinces of the Solomon Islands: Malaita, Western and Central, serving 3600 users overall. The project provides for the installation of pilot rural photovoltaic electrification plants with Li-Ion battery storage system, well and pump for drinking water production, LED lighting, information devices for schools and physicians for medical clinics, satellite phone for emergency communications and remote monitoring of the plant performance. The projects also provides for training activities with the Solomon Islands National University and Istituto Tecnico Don Bosco in Honiara, support for the creation of two young microenterprises for the maintenance of existing facilities and the local installation of new facilities of the same kind.
