Off-site construction value chains for the renovation of the built environment
For achieving the objectives:
Goals: 7. Affordable and clean energy, 9. Industry, innovation & infrastructure, 11. Sustainable cities and communities, 12. Resp. consumption/production, 13. Climate action
Description
Off-Site Construction (OSC) solutions are currently of high interest as they are a potentially very effective response to the need for massive redevelopment of the building stock. OSC is in fact an approach to the production and management processes of the built environment that reduces the intensity of on-site work to locate it mainly in the factory, i.e. a controlled environment where higher standards of efficiency, quality and safety can be achieved while requiring an integrated planning and optimization strategy of the production and supply chain. Modular buildings are constructed with the same materials and following the same building and architectural standards as traditional buildings. Once assembled, they are virtually indistinguishable from their site-built counterparts. Consistently, OSC technology can make a concrete and positive contribution to urban development in developing countries by fostering rapid, safe, low-cost, high-quality and sustainable development of the built environment
Benefits and Advantages
- Reduced waste and scrap production and easier recovery and recycling process.
- Halved completion time of construction projects due to the production of individual modules at the same time as the construction phase.
- Increased work safety and more agile implementation of digital technologies (e.g., BIM) due to production in a controlled environment
ENEA Services:
- Study, mapping and characterization of OSC value chains.
- Energy analysis of production processes and development of tools for the integrated performance analysis of supply chains.
- Identification and dissemination of good practices and benchmarks.
- Creation of decision-making frameworks with specific focuses such as the adoption of "innovative" or "unconventional" materials (e.g. biogenic recovered materials).
- Organization of working tables and networking with trade associations and companies in order to foster shared innovation practices.
- Creation of a national observatory on OSC value chains.
ENEA Activities:
2022-2024 – OFFICIO project, funded by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security, under the Electric System Research Programme, Project 1.6 “Energy Efficiency of Industrial Products and Processes", Work Package 2 "Studies and Solutions for the Efficiency and Optimization of Industrial Processes, Districts and Supply Chains". Characterization of the production and supply chain of Off-Site Construction (OSC) solutions for the thermal insulation of buildings, providing tools for its development and energy optimization and integration (progetto-officio.it).
